Agree, wearing a helmet while teaching is a must. And of course any time you're going full throttle while free-skiing/riding. About the only time I don't wear one is when I'm out skiing pretty casually or in wide-open backcountry, and that's pretty rare.

I have to say that, being an instructor for 10 years definitely refined the "eyes in the back of my head" to the point I can usually sense the impending hit. Lucky to never be nailed hard.

Rubicon pants are the way to go! I just ordered a second pair. In fact, if you are around a 34-36 waist I'll sell you my black ones, used one year, $100. Thanks for the quick quiz. I too forget the terms, but remember the ideals. I think blogging is helping me a lot to get back into the whole teaching thing. I'm feeling much more prepared this year than in years past. On the physical side though, I remember in years past feeling that first slide of the season and thinking that it feels like just yesterday since I've been on skis.

I'm also one that would love to to do the back-to-back seasons in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. I imagine that the experience raises you up to a much higher level of professionalism, that is as sharpm said, your knees can handle it.

Actually I'd be really interested to know some of the differences from the Australian teaching methods. One of the interesting twists to the PSIA is that they only occasionally give a view into how the rest of the world teaches. Terms are probably one of the first things that should be shared.

In hindsight the Australian terms were all different, so I had some un-learning to do. But having gone through their system kinda added to my overall knowledge. Maybe PSIA should encourage American instructors to buy an overseas manual and read it over the summer.

MSP has some great tips, but even JL takes the summer off to enjoy cycling, golf, the family, and it seems some stock trading.

I should clarify that I don't forget the ideals learned each season, but rather the specific names. Even if I don't remember the term "active learner", while teaching I can see what actively works better for the student. Which as I understand it, is the purpose of all the reading. Now, how to keep the terminology fresh is another question...

I have lots of friends who go back-to-back. Northern and Southern seasons that is. I tried it once. Passed my level 3 upon returning to the States. Huge head start. But not so good on the knees. I think the body needs a summer to recover!

SKI Magazine is definitely for the Deer Valley crowd. Ever wonder why DV is always rated #1 by "the readers of SKI Magazine?"

I still get SKI through PSIA I guess. I pretty much flip through now. Warren Miller's article is usually the highlight, this last issue no exception.

They also offer GPS systems for tracking your skiing during the day. I posted about Deer Valley using Youtube to promote their freestyle competition.

Erin at Deer Valley (their PR director) is way cool and is very hip to new technology. Plus she is super friendly. I called her up to ask her about Youtube, etc., and she spent about 20 minutes on the phone BSing about it.

I like the local ski shops here in PHX well enough. But here is the deal--I can buy new gear in wrap for half the retail price off of e-bay. If I want to talk shop or check stuff out or whatever, then I go over there. If they have a smokin' deal and a friend hookup, then I buy there.

Ski shops sell to gapers. They make their money off of them. The rest of us know someone in the ski shop or at the resort or buy stuff from friends or on e-bay. And gapers will still roll into Ski-world in their H2's and drop $2k on getting geared up.

As long as the quantities are limited, then let folks resell them. Ebay is going to undercut the local shops anyway and there ain't a thing they can do about it. all pro-forms do is allow folks to buy new gear before the season for the price it will sell for new on e-bay after the season.
